They cause problems being edited or imported into some things, but for playback, media player, quicktime, media player classic, VLC, of course iTunes, etc. I have also been able to send the M4A's (the default compressed file format, AAC) from iTunes around without a problem. I already use Reaper, so it's convenient for me. I haven't gotten to the bottom of it yet (haven't ruled out user error either as implausible as it sounds), but if I export from Reaper (a DAW I use for recording) there's no problem. But for some reason which eludes me, MP3s created on Audacity have refused to play on a few people's Macs.
They both use Lame to convert as is fairly common on Mac (and used to be on PC). I have Audacity and Reaper on my Mac (10.6.8 - old intel macbook pro). It's awkward, but in a pinch, you can change your iTunes import settings to MP3, convert your files and then change it back to AAC. Otherwise it'll offer to convert to AAC (.M4A) by default. I tried this in iTunes on my PC and I don't find the option to export or convert when I right-click. You may be on Windows, in that case someone else can chime in.
